KENYA- Ministering in a Women’s prison. Children are allowed to stay with their incarcerated mothers until they are 4 years old. WE came in to help “Please Pass the Bread” serve the afternoon meal (PPTB provides daily meals for the toddlers) and then have a service for the ladies. The children’s mothers are allowed to come and be with their kids during the lunch time, but not too many were there.
The prison staff is made up of almost all women, so the children are (very) scared of men. Any quick move on my part would send the children running. I had to be so gentle and move in a slow motion. I would hold the spoon of food and wait till they approached. It took a while, but as we were feeding them, they began to trust (I’m reminded of how patient the Lord is with us). By the end, a few of them wouldn’t leave my side.
The services (we had two) went REALLY well, and went much longer than the allotted time. We could visibly see the Lord healing the broken-hearted. Spent the afternoon playing with the kids in the (newly renovated) play area.
